Alfred piles into Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge, probably the most famous bridge in the
world, was completed in 1894, and is a fantastic
example of Victorian design and engineering.
By the late 1800’s, in order to make access to either side
of the river in the East End of London much easier, a
sorely needed bridge crossing of the River Thames to the
east, or down river, side of London Bridge had become
imperative. At this time the return journey took hours.
The bridge has hydraulically operated lifting bascules
and had to be constructed and operated whilst allowing
uninterrupted access up and down river for normal river
traffic, as it still does. It took nearly five hundred men
four years to build.
Visiting the Tower Bridge Exhibition is a very good way
of appreciating both the bridge and the magnificent
views from it.
Alfred, however, appears to be unimpressed by all of this.
