Alfred at Honfleur
Honfleur is a port on the Normandy coast in France.
In medieval times this port, along with Calais in
France and Rye, Sandwich and Deal in England
(thus,The Cinq Ports) were the principal commercial
trading links between the two countries.
Boats still berth safely in the inner harbour at
Honfleur at low tide, protected by lock gates.
Whilst the outer harbour at low tide is a blanket of
wet mud, which looks like sea swell.
Alfred Wallis sometimes liked to show us what
he thought was under the surface. He also always
painted a lighthouse in the same way,
wherever it was.
