Weigela with Mimbres Bee
The Mimbres were the prehistoric citizens of an area in
the south western United States in what is now a corner
of New Mexico.
They occupied this area from around A.D. 200 for about
nine hundred years, after which they disappeared
without trace.
It is probable that their pottery decoration was
influenced to some degree by the Hohokam cultures
which then thrived in a nearby area now known as
southern Arizona.
In the later stages of this vanished civilization a unique
form of highly stylized pottery decoration evolved depicting
lizards, birds, eagles, swallows, bees and other insects.
David has used this style of pottery decoration in his
painting, whilst adding some Art Deco influences,
in order to celebrate the continued success of a
cornerstone of our own civilization – the Bee.
